Types of Coffees

Espresso

Espresso is a type of coffee which is known to have originated in italy. This type of coffee can be prepared using different variants of coffee beans or even different types of roasts. How to prepare this brown elixir – it’s achieved by forcing  water through the ground coffee beans at a high pressure. The cup of espresso that you get as a result should have a rich flavor of coffee – not too bitter or acidic with a caramel coloured crema on top!

Americano

Americano is a diluted version of espresso as it usually requires two thirds of a cup to be filled with hot water and one shot of espresso to be added.

Cappuccino

Here is a drink that is loved by many – Cappuccino!

People love this coffee drink over others for its simplicity which lies in its creamier taste with the adorable foam on top which softens the espresso flavour. Italians consider the cappuccino as their breakfast drink. During festive seasons, you can even customize your cappuccino by adding some cocoa powder or cinnamon powder.

To make a good cappuccino, take one shot of espresso in a glass and add part of steamed milk and one part of milk foam.

Latte

Latte is similar to a cappuccino but the ratio of steamed milk is more in latte and with less foam. The less amount of foam is what gives us these cups of coffee with beautiful art drawn on top which are known as ‘latte art’. Many cafés all over the world have become tourist spots purely because of their latte art!

Mocha

Somebody had the brilliant idea of taking hot chocolate and coffee and pairing them together! That’s how we got mocha to exist. Mocha in its simplest form is just one shot of espresso added to a cup of hot chocolate. A refined version of mocha is made with one shot of espresso added to a small amount of hot chocolate and topped with some steamed milk and milk foam.

Cortado

Cortado is a Spanish word which means ‘to cut’. This is because cortado consists of one shot of espresso with almost the same quantity of steamed milk and this ratio helps to cut down the acidity in the coffee. This drink is differentiated by the steamed milk with no foam or texture added on top.

Flat white

A flat white resembles a cortado just with a lot more steamed milk on top. Here is a recipe to create your own flat white – one shot of espresso with 2 parts of steamed milk on top. This coffee drink also contains no foam on top. This drink is popular in countries such as Australia and New zealand.

Macchiato

Macchiato is a drink that came to be when people ordered a shot of espresso with a little dollop of milk foam in it. It was named so by Italians as it means stained or spotted. In Portugal this same drink is called cafe pintado as it means ‘coffee with a drop’.  It is interesting to note here that some baristas add a dollop of steamed milk rather than milk foam. It depends on an individual’s preference which of these options they would want on top of their espressos.

Cold brew

Cold brew is a recent brewing technique where the ground coffee beans are steeped in cold water for about 15-20 hours. You can customize the type of beans used to obtain a varied flavour. Cold brew has very less acidity due to its cold nature. The perfect ratio to make a cold brew is one shot  of espresso to 1 cup of water.
